Reasons why I would need to fit a new timer

Just wondering why I would need to fit a new timer? My machine just stopped working, light comes on, if I select D for drain, the pump comes on and will drain water from machine but if I select a program, say number 6, and press switch ON, the timer makes a noise as normal then moves on 1 click then does nothing..... could it be the timer??
