Thank you for your reply to my queston,but if the thermostat is faulty would it work on the other settings or is there more than one thermostat .Many Thanks Dave 1 Answer

There is only one 'sensor' on this machine which varies its resistance depending on water temperature. However it is possible if this is 'out of range' it may confuse the control board and cause this problem.

It could be the thermostat or the control board. Check what it is doing during its 40c wash. if it fills and washes continuously it suggests it is not heating. a faulty thermostat would either say it has reached temperature early and finish a cycle with cold water or it would continue to 'boil' the washing until it was stopped.
