having some trouble connecting this, the wires from the oven just slip through the element. New element is exactly the same as the old so I can't work it out. Is the oven wire meant to clip on somehow?

The connections are supposed to fit by pushing onto the element, it may be the connections have become damaged and will no longer fit and would have to be replaced, for more help see our video on changing an oven element www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-bwySCMG28 just copy and paste into your browser.
