I have an oldish Sebo X1. One day the motor just lost all power. I took it apart and examined the carbon brushes - these were still 15mm long but were pitted. When i ran the hoover sparks came from the brushes and no power. After i sanded down the brush ends it ran fine for 5 secs and then lost power and sparks again. My question is this: Seeing as the brushes are 15mm long and springy, will a simple brush change cure the problem or could it be something else causing the pitting? Eg. a capacitor or starter?

If there is still enough carbon to make good contact to the armature and the brushes move freely in the holders yet burn quickly on use it suggests the armature of the motor is damaged and you need a new motor.

Answer this question

Hi perkinsp3, as you'd imagine you'll have to remove the outer casing to get at the motor. This is probably screwed together - remove all outer screws as a start. The motor is situated in the base of the vacuum, and the brushes will be in the same vicinity. Best of luck.
