The instructions tell me to remove connection from 2 and connect to 2a but there is no 2a on the new thermostat

As we believe this is a bimetal switch and should be either open circuit or short circuit depending on ambient temperature then it should not matter which way it is connected.

This does not appear to come with the ignition button or lead.

Only if the control has been contaminated from a spillage would it be the likely cause. The problem will usually be the element failing.
I think I need a main oven thermostat and a top oven grill element

Maybe a good option for you would be to use a repair company like "Repaircare" who offer a fixed price option.
I am looking for a thermostat for my AEG Electrolux main oven it has 3 terminals on the back in line from corner to corner I have a number of the thermostat it is 55.17064.050 do you this same part like for like so swap wires one to one a time thanks 1 Answer

Hi senior, this thermostat isn't too difficult to fit. Check this video out for help: http://www.espares.co.uk/advice/cookers-and-hobs/a/1/1331/how-to-replace-a-thermostat-on-an-electric-ov.html. The cooker in the video isn't the same model as yours, but the process should be fairly similar.
