If the refrigerator Defrost thermostat is not working does a red warning light shown on the top of the Hotpoint Model FF64P 1 Answer

The red light will usually indicate the temperature is excessively high this can be due to a faulty thermostat or the compressor seized. Listen for a quiet 'tick' and another after ten seconds then repeating after another 60 seconds or so. This would be the compressor trying to start but cutting out after ten seconds, if this is the case it requires a new compressor (fitted by a system engineer).
