Would replacing the button solve the problem of start button not lighting up or do I need to replace something else?

It is likely to be the buttons as this can be a common problem with these buttons is people think they don't work unless pushed hard and this causes them to break. When you push these buttons only use light pressure but hold the button in for about 1 second as this allows the control board to 'scan' the button and recognise the command.
